The airship heads towards Leningrad. Passing the harbor, the crew hears the sirens of the steamers greeting the airship leaving for the Pole. The Norge, following the Neva, reaches the city, flies over the Winter Palace and Nevskij Prospekt. Once past the city, the airship enters a monotonous plain. The sunset is around 10 pm, but, as Nobile observes, “between dusk and dawn the light never faded”. The glow of the sky is visible towards the north. It is the first of a long series of white nights that will not leave the crew for over a month.
