Around two o’clock, on the right, the peaks of the Svalbard mountains begin to be seen and Nobile is awakened by one of the technicians. At 2.20 am the airship passes south of the small island of Jan Mayen, watching the southern end, Sörkapp, pass by on its right. Further ahead there is thick fog and the airship rises to fly over it, keeping in view the Svalbard mountains, which emerge from the clouds.
The spectacle of the snowy peaks and glaciers emerging from the fog, here and there gilded by the sun, was wonderful
